‘All of our dreams are at our feet’- Chatting to The Heavy Heavy
Kate Bowie talks origins, inspiration and tour high-jinks with The Heavy Heavy.
Why the f*ck are low rise jeans back
Take a deep breath – the jeans of your nightmares are back.
‘Controversial’ is a word that’s flung around a lot these days. Social media has given the argumentative a platform to debate everything from politics to pineapple on pizza, 24/7. But when the first few fashionistas shared their plans to ditch their high-waisted jeans last year, there was a bigger influx in online bickering than I’d seen any recent election garner. Try not to panic, because whether you love them or hate them, low ris...
Review: Debauched Tales, The Cloak and Dagger – ‘History’s intimate details in an equally intimate setting’
As the lights of The Cloak and Dagger’s basement somehow dimmed even more, and three costume-draped figures emerged from behind stacks of books, attendees of The Debauched Tales event might have wondered what they had gotten themselves in to.
Friends, Forgiveness and Magic Mushrooms – Review Beabadoobee, ‘Beatopia’
Until last month, Beabadoobee’s (admittedly pretty short) discography had landed her the job of reigning angsty teenage icon. That is until, perhaps, the release of her second album; ‘Beatopia’.
Gen Z are dressing like their dads this summer
Hot girl summer begone – it’s time to enter your Adam Sandler era.
Morrisey’s back in Brighton? – a brief history of The Smiths-on-sea
Ex-The-Smiths member, solo singer-songwriter, outspoken vegan and infamously contentious individual Morrisey has announced a UK and Ireland tour starting this September, with his final show tacking place at the Brighton Centre.
‘Expect great things’: Review – ‘Come To Life’, Shady Baby
Despite having only released one record, it doesn’t feel rash to say that you can expect great things from Brighton newcomers Shady Baby.
‘I’m quite rude when I take photos’ : New photo book by local artists conveys the feeling of ‘Just Passing Through’
Seconds after beginning my virtual chat with Brighton photographer Joe Willis and graphic designer Meg Turvey, Meg began nonchalantly flipping through their new photo book and Joe sucked lazily on a Frube yoghurt.
Festival tips and tricks from Boundary Festival Co-Director, Luke Ralph
Boundary Festival is back and bigger than ever. I spoke to co-director Luke Ralph about what’s new to Brighton’s biggest electronic dance festival and how attendees can prepare for their greatest weekend yet.
Even if you’ve only been keeping half an eye on the club and dance music scene in Brighton, it’s pretty likely that you’ve heard of Boundary Festival. It’s been booming EDM and D&B from Stanmer Park since 2016, and this year Brighton’s only capitol-F-festival is returning on the 24th Sep...
‘A nice radio friendly song about hating your offspring’: Review –‘Kids’, KEG
Overflowing crashing percussion, blaring trumpets and flippant lyrics, indie-art-punk seven piece KEG has certainly come back with a bang with their latest single, ‘Kids’.
Gen Z in the Big Apple
Kate Bowie investigates the fashion trend hitting NYC this summer.
Marbles, Lime Garden
You would be forgiven for thinking that you were late to the enormous house party with Lime Garden. Given their slick production, ear-worming hooks and consistently grunge-meets-psychedelia aesthetic, on first glance the 4-woman band might have been on the scene for a decade. You would, however, be wrong. Lime Garden, formed barely 3 years ago, have already carved out an unmatched glossy sound that’s crystallised on their latest release, ‘Marbles’.
The virtual reality art that lets you step inside another world, literally
As I begin our zoom meeting and the face of Brightonian artist, Maf’j Alvarez, blurs into focus, her background looks familiar. It’s not just that I’ve been there before – although I have visited the park she’s sitting in. Then it clicks. St Ann’s Well Garden is not only the setting to our interview but to her virtual reality (VR) installation called ‘Eva Quantica’, which will be displayed as part of the Brighton Festival from the 20th-22nd May.
‘A confident expertise that immediately scoops you into safe hands’ – Review: Belle and Sebastian – ‘A Bit of Previous’
Mention Glasgow Indie Pop band Belle and Sebastian to anyone and you’re quickly faced with two outcomes. Either they’ll start gabbing with enthusiasm or you’ll discover they are unfamiliar with a band that, despite undeniable international success, has managed to retain its cult status almost 40 decades after its inception. Whichever group you belong to, their new album ‘A Bit of Previous’ is decisively worth a listen (or multiple).
Looking Back on ‘The Way I Am’ – in conversation with Emminemmylou
Eminemmylou’s ‘The Way I Am’ on her 2006 album, ‘Muthabanjo’ is certainly an unforgettable start to an one-of-a-kind album.
